- Guide
Crewmates are the main protagonists of the game. As crewmate, you can win either by filling the task meter by doing tasks collectively as a group or voting out all the Impostors. Make sure you prove yourself innocent if a body is found to not get wrongfully voted out as well as ensuring that you are not killed by an Impostor.
Note that if there is 1 Crewmate left with 1 Impostor (2 total), 2 Crewmates left with 2 Impostors (4 total), or 3 Crewmates left with 3 Impostors (6 total), the game is an immediate loss.
Principles[]
- Witnessing: The first and most obvious principle is voting out impostors if you witness actions only impostors can do. If you see a kill occur, see an Impostor vent with Engineers turned off, see an Impostor vent out and in again quickly with Engineers turned on (Engineers have a cooldown), see a Shapeshifter cocoon, or see a Phantom cloud (The color of the cocoon or cloud is the same as their skin), you should let everybody know what happened via an emergency meeting (or a dead body report if it is a kill). The person you saw do that action must be the Impostor and can be voted out with certainty. Be careful with seeing someone kill if shapeshifters are turned on, the Impostor may be a shapeshifter and kill with someone else's skin. Seeing 2 of the same person in a round means 1 of them is the shapeshifter currently posing as them, who can be followed to catch them unshifting from the cooldown.
- Whenever you get caught witnessing something, it usually isn't a problem as you can call a meeting immediately by reporting the dead body. But for witnessing actions that aren't kills, Impostors can stop you by sabotaging, which prevents emergency meetings, or closing doors to kill you. To prevent this, find another Crewmate and group up with them as soon as possible. Alternatively, if there is an object in the way, run around in circles around it (such as in The Skeld's cafeteria tables) opposite to the Impostor until you find safety (This will not work if the kill distance is high).
- Suspicious Activity: Witnessing an Impostor isn't always possible, but they can still do things that are highly suspicious because they behave differently to Crewmates. Impostors are focused on killing, and many inexperienced players don't bother trying to build trust or faking tasks and instead seem to wander aimlessly trying to set up a dead body, especially if the area has no tasks. They may complete tasks wrong or do them too fast. They may also not fix sabotages or not go to them when they should, although many Crewmates also do this. Since the sabotage interface requires tapping a button, they may stop moving, sabotage, then start moving again, whereas experienced Impostors can walk while sabotaging at the same time. If you see them overzealously accusing without a good reason they are either the Impostor or an unintelligent Crewmate. Some Impostors are afraid of implicating themselves and don't talk or stress out and say too much, saying things only Impostors can know.
- Trustful Activity: On the other hand, there are many actions Crewmates can do that make them appear more innocent. While these aren't a complete clear, it decreases their chances of being Impostor. If they do tasks correctly, in the right order, do it in a sensible amount of time, or the task bar always updates and it updates when they finish, they appear more innocent. Crewmates who clear other Crewmates are also going out of their way to defend others, making them less suspicious. If they get an Impostor voted out, it almost always means they are innocent because an Impostor wouldn't vote out another Impostor. However, if the majority of the lobby already agrees, they could just be jumping on the bandwagon; this only applies if they are the one who caught them in the first place. If they've been seen many times in groups, they likely won't have the time to go out into other places to kill people.
- Deduction: Use deductive reasoning, which means to piece together information to reach a conclusion. If you saw 2 Crewmates together, then 1 of them dies, you can deduce that the other killed them. Likewise, if you saw another Crewmate leaving an area with a dead body, you can also deduce that they killed them. Shapeshifters who report (a dead body or emergency meeting) while shifting are shown reporting with their original skin and can be quickly voted out. Seeing someone go from one location to another without seeing them go through the required area to get there or getting there suspiciously fast likely vented. For example, if a player goes from one side of Gap Room on The Airship to the other without using the moving platform or taking the longer route, they may have used a vent. Similarly, this idea can be applied if a player moves from one side of Ventilation to the other faster than what would be normal. If you see a Crewmate enter a room and see that the room is empty without them exiting, they most likely vented. This is a broad principle that applies to many strategies.
- Alibis: If 2 or more Crewmates were together the whole time when a kill occurred, they have an alibi. This is because it is impossible for the Impostor to kill anonymously if someone was watching them the whole time. If there is only 1 impostor, it's a hard alibi, meaning they are both innocent for the whole match. If there are multiple impostors, it's a soft alibi, meaning they are innocent for that kill only. That is because another Impostor could kill for them. Stay together with other Crewmates to build alibis for each other.
- If it is a double or triple kill, meaning 2 or 3 simultaneous kills done by multiple impostors, hard alibis can be used because all the impostors were there for each kill. It is impossible for 1 impostor to double or triple kill and for 2 impostors to triple kill due to the kill cooldown.
- Tracking: You can make alibis by following another Crewmate around until a body is reported. If you've been with them the whole time, they are clear for the round (soft clear for multiple Impostors, hard clear for 1 Impostor). However, don't act suspicious or it may be misinterpreted as you chasing and trying to kill them, which could get you ejected. This does not apply if you are cleared. Trackers don't have to bother following the Crewmate themselves and can catch them doing impostor-only actions better than following can because they don't think they are being seen.
- Time of Death: The time of death is how long since a kill happened before it is discovered. If the time is near instant, a self-report can be deduced or a witness saw the kill happen. By combining this with alibis, the time of death can rule out people as impostor if they were found in other places the exact moment the kill occurred.
- Scientists can check vitals at any time to see if someone has died yet, and Noisemakers make a sound upon death; both of these give the time of death for a kill. The Vitals machine in Polus functions the same way as Scientists except that everybody can use the ability.
- Process of Elimination: If every other Crewmate is hard-cleared, which means proven to be innocent for the whole match, by process of elimination, they can deduce that the last Crewmate(s) are impostor.
- Visual Abilities: If you are on Cameras, Admin, or Doorlog, you can use the additional information that is given there. Cameras can be used to find out where Crewmates are based on where they go. If a dead body is found, a Crewmate that went that way seen from the cameras can be deduced as a major suspect. Admin gives all the information on the amount of Crewmates for each room. Venting is also obvious and can be addressed in meetings by asking who was there. Doorlogs are only in MIRA HQ, but shows the logs of those who cross the west, east, or north side of the map. If a Crewmate crosses one side from the logs and is seen on the other, it can be deduced that they must have vented. It is also very useful for keeping tabs on alibis.
- Tasks: Do tasks as fast as possible to get a task win and more time to be on visual abilities. Check the map if you don't know where a certain task is. Impostors who fake a visual task with visuals turned on immediately make themselves suspicious if the task doesn't show any response. If the task bar always updates, an Impostor may fake a task without it updating, which can implicate them (Factor in the fact that certain tasks require multiple steps, those don't update until the whole task is completed). For common tasks, a Crewmate doing one that isn't in the round is faking it (Such as Swipe Card being the common task instead of Fix Wiring, with the Crewmate doing Fix Wiring). The Impostor may also do a task in the wrong order such as doing Accept Divert Power without first doing Divert Power, or doing Upload Data in The Skeld that isn't in Admin, which always is. However, these advanced deductions may be difficult to explain in meetings. Many Impostors forget to fake tasks altogether and wander around locations for seemingly no reason (in actuality, they want to find someone alone to kill), so if you see a Crewmate not do any tasks they may be the Impostor. This doesn't apply later in the game if many Crewmates already finished their tasks. Impostors also sometimes get the timing wrong on a task, doing a normally long task in a suspiciously short amount of time.
- Visual Tasks: To prove your innocence, you can do a visual task in front of other Crewmates if visuals are turned on. Since the task shows it being done visually for other people to see, it is impossible to fake and means that you must be a Crewmate, making you hard clear and immune from getting voted out. Likewise, if you see other Crewmates do a visual task, they must be clear. Remember to tell everybody this information in meetings.
- For Submit Scan specifically, you can look at the walking animation and where the Crewmate is placed on the scanner to judge if its natural enough to be real. If you have scan and try doing the task while someone else is scanning, it will say "Waiting For (User)", meaning they must be doing the task and are innocent. It is the only task you can use to hard clear when visuals are turned off.
- Visual Tasks: To prove your innocence, you can do a visual task in front of other Crewmates if visuals are turned on. Likewise, if you see other Crewmates do a visual task, they must be clear. Remember to tell everybody this information in meetings.
- Staying Alive: The best way to stay alive is to ensure that your in areas that are risky for the Impostor to kill you in. Most kills happen while a Crewmate is busy preoccupied with a task or heading to one. Risky tasks are tasks that leave you very open to an Impostor kill. To prevent dying, these tasks should be done as quickly as possible, preferably at the start of the game or just after a meeting, as the kill cooldown that prevents kills is always active at the start of the game and the end of every meeting (Note that at the very beginning of every game, the kill cooldown is always 10 seconds regardless of host settings. It is only after the next kill or the next meeting that it is updated). By the time the cooldown is up, you will have likely completed your risky task and can move onto safer ones. If a bit of time has passed, risky tasks can be easily done if you are in an area with a group of people as the Impostor cannot kill with so many witnesses. Crewmates that are hard clear can be safe to be around even when alone unless a shapeshifter is in the lobby and you've lost track of them. If you are on a visual ability, that leaves you very vulnerable to a kill. Don't stay on it for long and make sure multiple Crewmates are near. On the other hand, if someone is on a visual ability such as cameras and you are being seen by it, you are much more likely to have witnesses if you get killed.
- Its good to also not stay alive and sacrifice yourself as long as it exposes the Impostor. Certain tactics pose as traps involving sacrificing yourself for the sake of getting Impostors voted out.
- Late Game: When most of the Crewmates have been killed off, that only leaves a few people left. Stay together with other Crewmates and watch other groups to keep tabs on alibis. This would ordinarily be difficult to keep track of, but since the lobby is more empty, it is well within practical. Process of elimination is used most often at this time in the round, especially if other Crewmates have been hard cleared. If there are 2 Crewmates left, the Impostor will most likely sabotage to buy time for their kill cooldown to end, which usually ends in a loss for Crewmates. When possible, call a meeting as soon as possible and vote as the game will lose if a Crewmate is killed at any time. If there are 3 Crewmates left, the Impostor has a number of strategies. They can kill 1 discretely and buy time for their cooldown for another kill by sabotaging or closing doors, get people to vote out a Crewmate, or kill and then pin the blame on another. These can all be stopped with the principles mentioned before.
- Viper Acid: If you see a player kill a Crewmate, and the dead body has acid on it, even if Shapeshifters are enabled, then the killer that you saw is A Viper, as it is impossible to have both Shapeshifter and Viper at the same time.
Tactics[]
- Know the order of the tasks. As mentioned before, many multi-staged tasks, such as Upload Data, have their stages in specific locations. If you see a Crewmate doing these tasks in the wrong order, they are likely an Impostor faking it. Here is a list of the following tasks with a task order which can be used to catch a fake task:
- The Skeld
-
- Fix Wiring, Stage 1 (Admin, Navigation, Storage, Electrical)
- Fix Wiring, Stage 2 (Admin, Navigation, Storage, Cafeteria)
- Fix Wiring, Stage 3 (Admin, Navigation, Cafeteria, Security)
- Empty Garbage, Stage 1 (Always Cafeteria)
- Empty Garbage, Stage 2 (Always Storage)
- Empty Chute, Stage 1 (Always O2)
- Empty Chute, Stage 2 (Always Storage)
- Download Data, Stage 1 (Cafeteria, Communications, Electrical, Navigation, Weapons)
- Upload Data, Stage 2 (Always Admin)
- Divert Power, Stage 1 (Always Electrical)
- Accept Diverted Power, Stage 2 (Communications, Lower Engine, Navigation, O2, Security, Shields, Upper Engine, Weapons)
- Align Engine Output, Stage 1 (Always Upper Engine)
- Align Engine Output, Stage 2 (Always Lower Engine)
- Fuel Engines, Stage 1A (Always Storage)
- Fuel Engines, Stage 1B (Always Upper Engine)
- Fuel Engines, Stage 2A (Always Storage)
- Fuel Engines, Stage 2B (Always Lower Engine)
- MIRA HQ
- Polus
- The Airship
- The Fungle
- A fake Divert Power panel exists in The Skeld's Reactor and Polus's Office, as well as fake Fix Wiring panels on The Airship. A Crewmate who is doing tasks there is faking it because no such task exists.
- Forced Alibi: This means to tell everyone else in a meeting that you are going to be following someone. If they are An Impostor, they are forced to keep you alive, as if they kill you, Crewmates will remember what you said and vote them out. Nevertheless, they can run away by calling a sabotage such as Fix Lights to lose track of you.
- Dead Accusers: A Crewmate who accuses another of being the Impostor may be killed later on. This could be the Impostor taking them out because they know too much. However, this can also be a form of reverse psychology, as the Impostor could kill them to frame the other for being the Impostor for killing them for accusing.
- Don't report shapeshifter kills. Instead, follow the shapeshifter so that you can watch their cooldown end as they cocoon back into their original skin, giving Crewmates an easy way of voting them out. In response, they will usually vent out, sabotage, or close doors to run away.
- Stacking Up: This is where two or more people hide behind each other in perfect symmetry posing as just 1 Crewmate (this works best with friends). Sometimes an Impostor can attempt to kill what they think is one player, only to have another player or more hiding behind, ready to catch them in the act and report the body.
- A piece of trivia: This happened to MoistCr1TiKaL one time in an Among Us public lobby.
- Task bar verification. If Task Bar Updates are real-time, head to the task nearest to the spawn area at the beginning of the round. Complete it as soon as possible by yourself before anyone else does any tasks so that other players can see you do it and clear you. This works because nobody else is doing tasks as early as you and the task bar updates to you completing it, leaving no room for doubt that you are innocent. Although this does involve intelligent Crewmates, so it is likely impractical in public lobbies. Likewise, if you see a Crewmate do this exact scenario, you can clear them.
- Hiding Spots: This is more-so useful in Hide n Seek, but there are several locations where you can hide to avoid getting killed or to track another Crewmate, such as the satellite dish in the Balcony on MIRA HQ or a blind-spot in the upper edge of Upper Engine in The Skeld. If you hide in these locations, you may catch Impostors in the act of killing a Crewmate or using a vent.
- Note that hiding can also make you look like you are waiting for a Crewmate to approach to kill them. Be sure not to rouse too much suspicion.
- Doorlog Trap: This is an advanced strategy. On MIRA HQ, if you have finished your tasks, you can stand over one of the Doorlog sensors to bait An Impostor into killing you. The sensor will update continuously because you are on it. Since the doorlog sensor is touch-activated, other living Crewmates can look at whoever passed the sensor last with you by checking Doorlogs. Dead bodies don't trigger Doorlogs, so if you stop popping up, smart Crewmates can use deductive reasoning to find the time of death. [needs testing]
- Near Task Win Sabotage: If An Impostor calls a Sabotage when they only need a single kill to win, they will likely wait near where the Sabotage is fixed. If the Crewmate's tasks happen to be nearly done, especially if the Sabotage is non-critical or has a long enough time, avoid fixing the Sabotage and instead try to finish your tasks to get a task win.
- Kill Meeting: When someone is killed on the same frame an emergency meeting occurs, their dead body appears under the Impostor's feet after the emergency meeting.
- Same Skin: Players that happen to have the exact same cosmetics and name can be misunderstood as there being a shapeshifter. You can always tell them apart from their color. Otherwise, they are hacking or there really is a shapeshifter.
- Vent fishing. This is very luck-dependent, but exploits the fact that Crewmates with the Clean Vent task can reveal who Impostors are by forcing them out of hiding should they enter the same vent used for the task. For example, Maroon is in Admin and notices that there is another player with them, but upon looking around, they notice that they are alone. If Maroon has the Clean Vent task, they can go to the vent and try to start the task, only for Brown to pop out of the vent instead. If Brown immediately goes back into the vent, then they are definitely An Impostor; Engineers have a cooldown that prevents them from repeatedly entering vents within a short period of time while Impostors do not.
- Quick Chat: Guests and users under the age of digital consent are restricted to Quick Chat, which makes it very hard to give an open-ended response to a question. If this seems to be the case, look at the Quick Chat wheel to see what Quick Chat users can respond with so they can answer the question with ease.
- Use the button wisely. You have a limited amount of emergency meetings; only use them for giving out vital information that could help Crewmates. Avoid using it at the very beginning of a game because there is no point and it wastes time for everybody, which almost always leads to you getting voted out or kicked.
- Announce visual tasks. If a meeting is called or a dead body is reported, and you have a visual task that you have not yet performed, you can tell other players to come with you and watch you doing the visual task. They will most likely agree to follow and verify you. However, if you see an Impostor do this when they only need a kill to win, it is a trap as they are trying to buy time to kill and win the game.
- Don't accuse others without reason. Accusing or yelling at random Crewmates because of their suspicious mannerisms is not a good idea. You could easily accuse an innocent Crewmate and get voted out in the next meeting. Even if you do, by chance, accuse an Impostor, Crewmates may not believe you. If you think someone is an Impostor, give sufficient reasoning as to why, or just say they are suspicious if you are not completely sure.
- Let crewmates defend themselves. Many times, an innocent Crewmate is ejected before they could explain themselves. Let them have a say as to why they are innocent instead of recklessly voting for them. Employ an innocent until proven guilty doctrine and only vote out Crewmates if they are proven to be Impostor, not if they fail to prove themselves to be clear.
