- Guide
This article is the strategy section for Shapeshifters.
- Be secretive. Never, ever let anyone see you shapeshift. If they do, they immediately know you're an Impostor because the animation always uses the player's original color.
- If you are seen, the best bet is to kill the witness immediately.
- This is why you should, if possible, make sure that your kill cooldown has run out.
- If you are seen, the best bet is to kill the witness immediately.
- Frame people. One strategy is to kill a Crewmate while shifted in front of a low - level witness. They'll think that it was the person you shifted into, and when the crew ejects the player and finds out they were not an Impostor, they'll blame it on the witness and eject them, successfully eliminating two players from the match.
- But be careful - some players aren't going to be fooled. They'll know it was a Shapeshifter.
- If you blatantly kill in front of people while disguised, good players will be suspicious of a Shapeshifter.
- Another way to frame people is shift into them and then fake a task. The crew will know the task wasn't actually completed, so they'll be suspicious of the person you framed.
- Clever Framer. This strategy works on the Skeld, Mira HQ (preferably), and Fungle (sometimes). It involves finding someone alone in Reactor, shifting and going to Reactor, killing that person, and then causing a Reactor Meltdown. When people rush into Reactor and see the body, (you must still be shifted) vent before they report it. This strategy works because usually when you see someone vent and then a body is reported, that person will be suspicious. In all the chaos, those Crewmates won't realize it was a Shapeshifter. However, this trick is difficult to pull off because you can only stay shifted for a certain amount of time.
- Use sabotages cleverly. Trigger a critical sabotage and then shapeshift far from the location of the sabotage. Experienced players may expect this and walk away from the sabotage to catch you, so instead you can sabotage lights to make almost any relatively low-traffic location excellent for shapeshifting.
- Best locations to shapeshift:
- The Skeld: The top of Cafeteria, top and bottom of Reactor (assuming no Engineers in your game), and Communications. Behind the upper engine is good too, but slightly riskier.
- Mira HQ: Dropship, Greenhouse, and Decontamination. Be careful: Since many locations have a vent and all vents are interconnected, engineers may travel quickly across the map and expose you.
- Polus: Dropship and Specimen room.
- The Airship: Vault, Cockpit, and the darkroom in Main Hall.
- The Fungle: Dropship is arguably the only location low-traffic enough to be safe for shapeshifting, especially since this map lacks a lights sabotage.
- Do not shapeshift at the wall. Do not shapeshift near or at the wall. Anyone near the wall can see your colour since the walls do not provide a shadow or hide it.
- Shapeshift into a fellow Impostor if the other Impostors are not Shapeshifters as long as you can easily find The Impostor you shifted. Don't kill unless you are with The Impostor you shifted into. This strategy will divert suspicions away from the partner you shifted into. Use this strategy sparingly.
- During a round, shapeshift into the player who was most suspicious from the previous round, then kill, vent, or generally act suspicious where others can see you. Their initial suspicion of this crewmate may subconsciously cause them to accuse without remembering it could be a shapeshifter.
- In high-level lobbies, it is best to act subtle. If you blatantly kill in plain view, players will likely immediately know it was a shapeshifter, partially clearing the person you attempted to frame.
- Here's a workaround that assumes you have a Viper in your lobby: Stay with the Viper while shifted. If they kill, they will likely vent. Instead of entering the vent with them, walk away from the body. If you have excellent timing (and a bit of luck), a Crewmate will walk in on you walking from the body and accuse the person you were shifted as of being a Viper, without considering the probability of a Shapeshifter, since Shapeshifters cannot use Acid. This may get two more Crewmates ejected.
- If you kill in front of other players, they will likely follow you to see you unshift and expose you. After killing, run to the nearest vent and enter it. They will not see your unshift animation.
- If you've killed while shapeshifted in front of a large group and they realized it was a shapeshifter, you can employ the following tactic; it especially works if you already have a small amount of suspicion on you. While not shifted, kill in front of a large group. They will almost certainly suspect a shapeshifter of you. This is even more powerful if your teammate happens to be alone, as they may claim you were with them, seemingly clearing you.
- This is obviously a very risky tactic; inexperienced players may not realize shapeshifters exist, experts may see through your tactic, and Trackers and Detectives can still expose you.
- Fake tasks to frame a Crewmate while shifted. This strategy is extremely helpful in making the Crewmates suspect a fellow Crewmate if you don't want to kill someone, because blatantly killing someone can make Crewmates think it may have been a shifter.
- Beware Engineers, Detectives & Trackers. They can easily catch you shapeshifting while they are in vents (for Engineers), know your real color somewhere else (for Trackers) or know where you were when a murder you made happened (for Detectives) without you knowing and accuse you, thus resulting in the Crew ejecting you.
- Do not shapeshift when there are few crew members remaining, because if they see you while shifted they will easily single you out.
