- Hide n Seek
Hide n Seek is a game mode in Among Us, released on December 9, 2022. It is the first alternative Gamemode released.
Overview
The Impostor, also known as the Seeker, has to kill Crewmates who are hiding throughout the map. Living players have limited vision (configurable) and may have a limited cone of vision (referred to as Flashlight Mode). The Impostor is visually distinguished from the other Crewmates, having a permanently open mouth with sharp teeth and a wiggling tongue. The Crewmates have to survive until the timer runs out. After the timer runs out, all Tasks are disabled and the Seeker is given a final chance to chase down the Crewmates, referred to as "Final Hide".
During this Final Hide, The Seeker gains a speed boost and tasks are disabled for the rest of the game, with the Timer Bar turning red as a visual indicator. An alarm sound effect also plays to signify the Final Hide.
All Crewmates can use the Vent ability to hide from The Seeker but can only vent for a limited number of times per game and venting has a drastically reduced duration. The Seeker cannot use the Vents. The task bar is replaced by a timer bar, though tasks are still available, and completing them will reduce the time. The Impostor wins if all Crewmates are killed, otherwise, the Crewmates win.
Gameplay Differences
- The game mode has a time limit configurable by the host.
- After the initial timer runs out, the Final Hide begins. In this last phase, The Impostor gets a speed boost (can be adjusted in Options) and the Seek ability, depending on if they don't have the ability yet. The timer bar and map become red, similar to during critical Sabotages. Crewmates can no longer complete tasks. During the Final Hide, pings will be emitted every 6 seconds (configurable), giving the Seeker a visual indicator of every living Crewmate's location similar to that of the Noisemaker's ability.. The Ping interval can be adjusted in Options.
- Players have a limited cone of vision called the Flashlight which can be moved around. It can be removed, or its range can be altered in the options.
- There is only one Impostor, who is revealed to all players during the role reveal.
- In private lobbies, hosts can choose who the Seeker will be, however, in public lobbies, The Impostor is chosen randomly in a setting called "Round-robin".
- The Impostor is taller and has an open mouth, fixed in a wicked grin, with sharp teeth and a wiggling needle tongue.
- The Impostor has a kill cooldown of 1 second.
- The Impostor can use the Seek ability in the final minute or once they have killed enough Crewmates, as mentioned before.
- All Crewmates are automatically Engineers and can Vent, but only a limited number of times. The number of vent uses and amount of seconds inside the vent allowed can be altered in the options. Also, The Seeker cannot vent.
- There is a Danger Meter on the top left corner that tells the Crewmates how close The Impostor is to the player. It changes from blue to yellow to red. It will start shaking once the Danger Meter is at 5, the highest.
- There is background music that gets louder and has more riffs, depending on the proximity to The Impostor. It can only be heard when alive, after being killed this music is fixed on the lowest level, even if you're next to them or spectating them.
- If you are The Seeker, you will hear a unique music track for the entire game.
- Underneath the Timer Bar, there is a series of greyed out Crewmates representing all Crewmates in the current game. This is used to tally the amount of living Crewmates by crossing out an icon for every killed Crewmate.
- There is a message that pops up on the screen that tells players when a Crewmate is killed, this also displays the nameplate of the victim.
- Ghosts cannot do tasks. Instead, they are prompted to "enjoy the chaos". In versions of the game before Hide n Seek was added, the message used for dead Ghosts in the gamemode was originally found in the game's files as unused content. This is also true for the jingle that plays when the impostor disconnects from the game.
- Sabotaging, emergency meetings, and reporting are disabled. On all maps, the emergency button is also destroyed.
- On The Airship, the moving platform in Gap Room is inaccessible and stuck in the middle of the gap with a cross-out sign on it.
- In this mode, any visor or skin cosmetics on The Impostor will be temporarily removed. However hat cosmetics are still visible.
- In this mode, pets tend to cause lag for all players. However, this will probably be fixed.
- During the countdown before The Impostor is released, they fall to the ground, start to shake violently, and then once the time is up their mouth opens and they scream to indicate this. The Impostor animation plays on the bottom left corner of the Gap Room on The Airship, as it is unknown where they will spawn.
April Fools changes
- For April Fools 2023, The Hide n Seek Mode is renamed, Horse Wrangling.
- All Crewmates are Horse-like creatures.
- The Seeker is replaced with a Rancher.
- A unique kill screen will occur if the Rancher kills a Crewmate where the Impostor ties up the Crewmate with a rope.
- Horse Wrangling also has its unique music played during gameplay.
Fan-made version
Before the game mode was an official part of the game, players took it upon themselves to create a rendition of the mode using features that were already present in the game. They colloquially refer to these games as "Hide N' Seek" or "Shift N' Seek", depending on whether the Shapeshifter role is enabled or not, and indicate these games by the host changing their username to one of these. Lobby options are selected to be in balance and emulate what is formerly known about Hide n Seek.
Rules often include all players refraining from starting an emergency meeting or using monitoring abilities, Crewmates and ghosts trying to complete their tasks, and Impostors having reduced vision while revealing themselves at the start and trying to kill the Crewmates without the use of vents or Sabotages. If Shapeshifters are enabled, they are expected to shift into their next target before killing them and can only unshift if they have killed them or are about to change their target.
