The Fungle is the fifth map for Among Us. It was initially teased at the Summer Game Fest on June 10, 2021.[1] It was revealed as The Fungle on 14th September 2023 as part of a Nintendo Direct. It was announced on 11th October 2023 that the map launched on 24th October 2023.

The setting takes place on a rocky island filled with fungi, in the aftermath of an incident that destroyed The Skeld, and the crewmates had salvaged the wreckage to survive in their new environment.

Background

At one point, The Skeld arrived over a rocky island in an unspecified world filled with fungal flora, on an analytical mission. However, spores in the air quickly infiltrated the ship, which started breaking down under an onslaught of mushrooms in a matter of seconds. Its crew managed to escape an exploding Skeld just in time, however the evacuation was so rushed that they didn't close the rear door (causing one crewmate to fall out, only to be saved by its parachute), and the dropship crash-landed into the rocky island below.[2]

Over time, it's presumed that the crewmates salvaged the remains of the dropship and The Skeld, and organized themselves to survive on the island.

Development and release

Innersloth announced a fifth map as one of its planned additions to the game during the Summer Game Fest event on June 10, 2021, but nothing was shown apart from an unknown object.[3] A teaser featuring Pink in a place that appears to be a server room was also released on Innersloth's Among Us roadmap. However, neither of these appear in the map. Therefore, one may presume that the original concept designs for Map 5 were for a different map that was scrapped for The Fungle instead.

On January 17, 2022, when Innersloth revealed their roadmap for 2022, the developers confirmed that Map 5 was still in development despite it being unintentionally omitted from the roadmap.[4]

On February 2, 2023, when Innersloth revealed their roadmap for 2023, the developers confirmed that Map 5 is going to be released later in 2023 and that there are going to be new tasks and more cosmetics.[5]

On September 14, 2023, Innersloth revealed the map name to be "The Fungle" and that it was releasing in October 2023 as part of a Nintendo Direct. Tasks seen in the video included roasting crewmate-shaped marshmallows and chopping suspiciously looking veggies.[6][7]

On October 11, 2023, Innersloth confirmed the release date to be October 24, 2023.[8]

On October 24, at 10 AM Pacific Time, a premier took place showing off the Fungle and the update introducing the Fungle went live the same time.[9]

Locations

Beach

Beach is one of the outside areas of the map, where the Crew have set up camp. Players start the game around the central campfire of this area.

Cafeteria

Cafeteria is the ruins of the Cafeteria on The Skeld.

Communications

Communications has a lot of technical equipment, including a number pad for resolving Comms Sabotaged.

Dock

Dock extends from the kitchen, providing a spot to catch fish.

Dropship

Dropship is the crashed dropship from which the Crew arrived on the island.

Greenhouse

Greenhouse is located in the Jungle, providing the Crew with edible vegetables.

Jungle

Jungle is one of the outside areas of the map. There are mushrooms scattered about.

Kitchen

Kitchen is located south on the Beach. It is equipped with a cutting board for vegetables and a makeshift grill for cooking fish.

Laboratory

Laboratory houses some scientific equipment, including a Vitals monitor.

Lookout

Lookout has number pads for resolving Comms Sabotaged and verifying Crew Ids. There is also a set of binoculars used to survey the Beach and Jungle areas.

Meeting Room

Meeting Room is the only location on the Fungle that has neither tasks nor sabotages. Emergency meetings are held here, and as such, there is a conch shell for signalling emergencies on the meeting room table.

Mining Pit

Mining Pit is a rocky area rich in minerals, where the Crew mine for resources.

Reactor

Reactor is a still-functioning reactor from the crashed ship. It contains two hand readers to resolve Reactor Meltdown, plus some equipment that can be salvaged for parts.

Splash Zone

Splash Zone is a subsection of the Beach for recreational activities.

Storage

Storage provides access to fresh water and a zipline to Communications.

The Cliffs

The Cliffs is an outside area only reachable by ladders or venting. Because it is on the same elevation as Lookout, it cannot be viewed through the binoculars.

The Dorm

The Dorm is a recreational room adjacent to the Meeting Room.

Upper Engine

Upper Engine is the remnant of the same engine from The Skeld. It still has useful parts and fuel to be salvaged for use in the main camp.

The vent system consists of strange looking flowers that 'eat' Impostors or Engineers and spit them out. A unique sabotage, Mushroom Mixup, is available in this map, which causes all players to assume random cosmetics and colors. Crewmates cannot see player names during this sabotage, but Impostors and Ghosts can.

Trivia

  • The eject is a reference to the Survivor series as the boat is similar.
  • Innersloth release 2 images which showed how The Fungle was going to look like, however, one of the images have been modified and the other one was scrapped or planned to be release in the future.
  • On Top Of The Map there Is A No Ghosts Sign Next to Where The Invisible Barrier is. It also could be a reference to the ghostbusters' logo.
  • This is the only map that wasn't released as part of a bundle, meaning there were no skins, hats or pets released alonggside it.
  • 'Fungle' is a portmanteau of 'jungle' and 'fungus'.
    • Coincidentally, the word is also similiar to 'fungal', an adjective used to point out things that are related to fungi.
  • This map is the second map to have no visual tasks, with the first being The Airship.
