Practice, formerly known as Freeplay, is a game mode in Among Us selectable on the main menu. It is currently the only single-player mode in the game and does not require internet connection to be played.
Overview[]
In Practice, the player is free to explore any map outside of a regular game environment. Several "dummy" Crewmates are positioned around the map and do not move or act in any way, other than by randomly voting. A laptop can be accessed, which allows for the player to customize their tasks freely, as well as whether or not they are an Impostor. All abilities from the classic game, such as Sabotaging and reporting, are usable.
Practice is an excellent way to practice routes as both a Crewmate and An Impostor, a player should always take advantage of what they can do on each map and plan the best ways to use this to their advantage. Playing this mode can help increase players' chances of victory during a typical play session. However, when all players are killed, all tasks are completed, a critical Sabotage's countdown ended, or when all the players are voted out, all "dummy" Crewmates and tasks will be reset. It is often considered a "training mode".
Trivia[]
- Winning or losing a game in Practice would give you a message and reset the game.
- As of version 2022.12.8, this is no longer applied.
- As of version 2023.3.28, this now applies again.
- As of version 2022.12.8, this is no longer applied.
- Practice is currently the only mode with non-player characters.
- Practice was originally called "Free Play Mode", until it was renamed to "Freeplay", and renamed again to "Practice".
- When an emergency meeting is called, or a dead body is reported, all dummies automatically either vote any living character or skip voting without sending messages in the chat. This can result in the player being ejected and dummies voting for themselves.
- Practice is currently the only mode where a player can switch from a Crewmate to An Impostor and vice versa.
- Because the game starts right away without the starting scene, players cannot change their character's appearance while in Practice and will default to their appearance in their last game.
- In an older version of Among Us, when a critical Sabotage was called, using a vent within one second before the time runs out caused The Impostor to be invisible. Killing a Crewmate or venting would result in the appearance of The Impostor.
- The Impostor could move freely while in this state, and the arrows were still shown. The Impostor could jump out of any vent, including ones not in the current vent chain.
- If their role was switched back to Crewmate, they could use vents, but only the group of vents they entered to create the glitch. The venting animation did not show, but the player would be teleported to the other vents they pressed the arrows to get to.
- The dummies can eject the player out and if they are a Crewmate, this allows them to play as a regular ghost.
- The Reactor Meltdown and Reset Seismic Stabilizers Sabotages cannot be fixed in Practice unless a body is reported.
- On MIRA HQ and The Airship, a player set as Crewmate cannot fix Comms Sabotaged and Avert Crash Course, respectively. Only Impostors or Engineers can fix Comms Sabotaged/Avert Crash Course via the vents in Office and MedBay/Gap Room.
- The computer where players can customize their tasks is called the Task Tester 2000.
- Pressing the emergency meeting button as Fortegreen in Practice will result in a softlock.
- The game options are not interchangeable as to a typical lobby. But, if we host a game with specific settings, Practice will also follow these settings.
- In Practice, if the player is a ghost and becomes an Impostor via customize, the game will reset everything to its standard state and resurrect the player. However, the player's task list will say both "Sabotage and kill everyone" and "You are dead. Finish your tasks to win." If they switch back to a Crewmate, the task list will still say that the player is dead even though they are not.
- In Practice, it is possible to do multiple Divert Power, Upload Data, and Fix Weather Node tasks.
- When a Sabotage was happening when The Impostor killed a dummy and won, the Sabotage still remains, without resetting the countdown.
- If the player is a ghost and finishes their tasks, the game does not end despite the taskbar being full. This is most likely a glitch.
- If the player kills a dummy and then switches back to a Crewmate and gets ejected or turns into a Guardian Angel, it is possible to see a ghost dummy. All ghost dummies are guardian angels.
- A player can always call nine emergency meetings in a single Practice game, although the number used to be one.
- If a player runs out of emergency meetings, they can switch from Crewmate to Impostor (or vice versa) and back again to reset their emergency meeting count.
- This is the only gamemode where An Impostor could have a partially done task or task list.
- If the player tries to deselect all of their tasks with the Task Tester 2000, the game will say that the Crew has finished all tasks and won, then assign new tasks to the player.
- If the player switches to another role while shifted as a Shapeshifter, they will remain shifted until they switch back and select the Shift button again. It is currently unknown whether this is intentional or not.
